1978 Peavey T-60 in beautiful condition with original hard case. This stunning 44 year old example was way ahead of its time when it was brought out to compete against the inferior Fender & Gibson guitars being produced during this era. The guitar was loaded with two epoxy-potted four-conductor "full-range" humbuckers with a blade design, aka Super Ferrite pickups. They were covered with Rick-style toaster design pickup covers, had standard PAF dimensions, and were designed to sound good as humbuckers and single-coils when in split mode. The wiring was really ahead of its time back in 1978, sporting out-of-phase and coil-split options, but in a very special way. Basically, the original wiring is using a 3-way pickup selector switch (in this case a DPDT on-on-on type) for a Les Paul-style switching with both pickups together in parallel in the middle position. Next there is a DPDT on-on switch, serving as an out-of-phase switch for the bridge pickup, and a 250k volume and tone control for each pickup, á la Les Paul but independent from the other pickup's circuit. The volume controls both have a "cap only" treble-bleed network to keep the high-end alive when rolling down the volume. The value for the T-60 guitar was 1000 pF The tone controls have a 0.033 uF tone cap for the bridge and a 0.022 uF tone cap for the neck pickup.
So with the quality problems of Fender and Gibson at the time, what did a fella do if he wanted a new, USA-made guitar that offered both quality and affordability? Hartley Peavey, with help from Chip Todd (the “T” in T-60), gave us one of the only choices we had. The T-60 featured the world’s new neck and body production techniques that are common today, but never seen before. It also employed the first electrically-charged spray booth production method. It also boasted the first tone circuit/coil-splitting electronics package! It was not sloppily made and it didn’t use cheap components. The body was cut by a computer (sort of), and the guitar was much for efficiently produced. The necks were revolutionary and able to be produced so they were all identical, greatly enhancing quality control over other USA guitar rivals. The electronics were ahead of their time, utilizing coil-splitting to take you from that single-coil twang to that full humbucker sound for snotty rock and roll tones. The finish was applied with a revolutionary process as well. The guitar was positively charged so that the paint would be attracted to the guitar and coat it evenly. Many of T-60’s revolutionary production techniques are commonplace today. The T-60 had a truly ground-breaking design, revolutionary production methods, and an innovative final product. At 1/3 the cost of a Strat, if you wanted a quality guitar that boasted an American-made pedigree, this was one awesome good choice to make. It even came in a case that looked more suitable for a Husqvarna or Stihl chainsaw, and was equally as tough. It enjoys more than a simple cult following. There is even an owner’s and appreciator’s web group known as the T-60 Mafia! You can join by purchasing this epic example!
